This summer, children in the Rio Grande Valley participated in a chess camp at UTRGV, where they learned from skilled grandmasters. Two brothers, Savvy Fei Yan and Ivan Lopez, attended the camp to enhance their chess skills. The camp, led by UTRGV chess program manager Alex Mistah, included 18 students who engaged in chess games, tournaments, and puzzle-solving activities. Fellow grandmaster Vladimir Bellows, a member of UTRGV's national collegiate chess championship team, also assisted. The program aims to strengthen young players, many of whom started their journey at similar camps. The experience allowed participants to receive training from accomplished players, fostering their growth in the game.
