Quad-tendon (autograft) One of the strongest grafts. No permanent weakness. Same success rates as patellar tendon. Decreased risk of kneeling pain.
Abstract: Failure rates among primary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) range from 3.2% to 11.1%.
There are two main options for grafts - autograft and allograft. Autograft requires taking tendon from another location in your own body (termed harvesting) and moving it to replace the ACL. Allograft, also called donor graft or cadaver graft, is tendon from someone who has donated their tissue.
Allograft: In this type of surgery, the surgeon replaces your torn ACL with a tendon graft from a donor. Yes, you read that right from a donor! Autograft: In contrast, an autograft involves taking tissue from your own body, usually from your hamstring tendon or patellar tendon, to reconstruct the ACL.
Additionally, there is no potential for outside disease transmission or rejection of the tendon. An autograft is also stronger than an allograft because of the sterilization process for donor tissue. An autograft is typically the recommended graft for patients younger than 40, but exceptions do exist.
In general, there are three main graft options: a patellar tendon autograft, a hamstring autograft, and an allograft. An autograft comes from the patients own body, whereas an allograft comes from a cadaver donor. An allograft can come from patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, achilles and other ankle tendons.
1, 2 Still, the most commonly used autografts for ACL reconstruction are the bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendons (HT). There is some evidence to suggest that BPTB autografts produce more pain than HT autografts both in the immediate postoperative period as well as in the long term.
An autograft is a part of a tendon taken from your own hamstring or kneecap that is inserted into the knee joint to replace a torn ligament. It is less likely to re-tear (especially in athletes under 30), but requires longer recovery. We will help you determine which type of tissue is right for you.
