4-1 CANCELLING CASES. The lender must notify the appropriate HOC via FHA Connection, or its functional equivalent, to close outstanding files and cancel the FHA case number if the origination and closing of a loan will not be completed or if FHA mortgage insurance endorsement will not be sought.
The lender must notify the FHA Homeownership Center with jurisdiction in that area. Lenders cannot cancel a case number for a loan that has already closed or for a loan the finance company does not own or hold. Lenders also cannot cancel FHA case numbers via the online system known as FHA Connection.
In the lending industry, these loans are known as MERS as Original Mortgagee or MOM loans. Why would your lender name MERS as the beneficiary or mortgagee? It saves time and recording costs. If a loan is designated as a MOM loan, lenders wont have to submit new assignments every time the loan is sold.

What is an Assignment Of Loan? Under an assignment of loan, a lender (the assignor) assigns its rights relating to a loan agreement to a new lender (the assignee). Only the assignors rights under the loan agreement are assigned.
If a case number has been canceled, and FHA insurance will be sought, the lender must fax a request to the appropriate HOC, requesting that the case number be reinstated to an active status.
In order to request a case number cancellation, contact the FHA Homeownership Center with jurisdiction over the area to initiate the process. This can be done by e-mail and must include the lender name, email address, telephone and contact information; and case number.
