On behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff, Military Personnel Command (MILPERSCOM) provides functional direction and guidance to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) on all matters pertaining to the management of military personnel.
In times of conflict, military necessity is the notion used to justify the recourse to violence. Any violence or destruction that is not justified by military necessity is prohibited by the law of armed conflict.
The principle of military necessity permits only that degree and kind of force required to achieve the legitimate purpose of a conflict, i.e. the complete or partial submission of the enemy at the earliest possible moment with the minimum expenditure of life and resources.
Vacation. As a full-time member, you will start with 20 paid vacation days per year. These can normally be scheduled around training and operational requirements. The vacation time will increase throughout your career, to a maximum of 30 days.
Imperative military requirements mean a situation or circumstance that precludes a CF member from taking leave or permits a CO to recall a member from leave.
New recruits live on-base during their initial training, 10 weeks for NCM and 12 weeks for officers. After training, Regular Force members live near or on the base, and rent or own their own house or apartment.
You may be deployed in Canada or abroad. Depending on the mission, deployments can last from a few weeks to over a year. Most deployments range from six to twelve months. Forces members must be ready to be deployed on short notice.
CFOne card The card is available to CAF members, veterans and their families. To obtain a CFOne card or a Veterans service card as a veteran, you must have successfully completed basic training and obtained an honourable discharge.
Personnel Support Programs (PSP) provides morale and welfare services for Canadian Forces (CF) men and women, and their families. PSP is part of Non Public Funds (NPF), meaning that they dont directly receive tax-payer money. They are, however, closely related to the publicly funded Department of National Defence.
