Ctrl+A does work if I want to remove all content controls however.
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire document. Right-click a visible content control. In the context menu, click Remove Content Control.
Turn AutoCorrect on or off in Word Go to File Options Proofing and select AutoCorrect Options. On the AutoCorrect tab, select or clear Replace text as you type.
To eliminate these Content Control boxes, these are the options: Select the whole document, then right-click on one of the boxed words (content control area) and select Remove Content Controls from the context menu that pops up. The change will remain tracked and can/must additionally be accepted or rejected.

If you would like to delete or remove Content controls in Word: Press Ctrl+A to select the entire document. Then, right-click a visible content control. Now, in the context menu that appears on your computer screen, click Remove Content Control.
Set or change the properties for content controls Select the content control, and click Properties in the Controls group. In the Content Control Properties dialog box, choose whether the content control can be deleted or edited when someone uses your template.
View the Developer tab to add or change content controls In the list of tabs under Customize the Ribbon, select the Developer box and then click OK. Do one of the following: To add a control, click in the document where you want to add it, and then click the control you want to add on the Design tab.
Right-click the selected content control to display a shortcut menu (Figure 5-15). Click Remove Content Control on the shortcut menu to delete the selected content control, which also deletes the placeholder text contained in the content control.
That is a Content Control. Use the Properties to fix this. You can right-click on the control to change the properties. Otherwise, you can use the Properties button on the Developer Tab to docHub them. Uncheck the one that says it cant be deleted.
