A DNR order is allowed for any reason. Any adult can request a DNR, including healthy adults. People most likely to use them are those who know in advance that their chance of surviving CPR is very low and/or they dont want to spend their last days on life support.
Question: What happens if you resuscitate someone with a DNR? If you attempt resuscitation on a person who has a valid DNR order, you open yourself up to lawsuit by the estate (read: family) of the person with the DNR order, especially if the attempt is successful and they are indeed brought back to life.
Depressed patients are less likely to have DNR status, and even with DNR status are less likely to die in the hospital relative to those without depression.
Regardless of the format or the venue, DNR orders almost always follow the same general rules to be valid: DNR orders must be written by medical professionals rather than verbalized. Written DNR orders must include the patients name. DNR orders must be dated. The DNR order must be signed by the healthcare provider.
If you decide you want a DNR order, tell your doctor and health care team what you want. Your doctor must follow your wishes, or: Your doctor may transfer your care to a doctor who will carry out your wishes.
A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops.
A do-not-resuscitate, or DNR, order is used to indicate when a patient chooses to forgo resuscitation, however recent analysis shows that multiple studies have connected the presence of DNR orders to elevated death rates, poorer medical care, and negative health outcomes.
The nonhospital DNR form is very short, not even a full page. It just includes the patients name, date of birth, a statement indicating, do not resuscitate the person named above, and then signatures and information for the physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant completing the form.
