After giving blood, some persons may experience nausea, drowsiness, or dizziness. If it occurs, it should only last for a limited timeframe. You can lay down and put your feet up until you feel better. Additionally, there may be some bleeding where the needle is inserted.
You must wait at least eight weeks (56 days) between donations of whole blood and 16 weeks (112 days) between Power Red donations. Whole blood donors can donate up to 6 times a year. Platelet apheresis donors may give every 7 days up to 24 times per year.
Do eat a low fat healthy meal before you donate. Do drink plenty of fluids one day before, the day of and one day after your donation. Do not smoke immediately before or within one hour after your donation to avoid light-headedness. Do not rush through juice and cookies.
If you dont have enough iron stored away prior to giving blood, you could become anemic, which can make you feel tired and weak. Iron-rich foods include red meat, eggs, poultry, fish and leafy green vegetables.
Over the next 48 hours: Drink plenty of fluids to replenish the volume lost during donation. Avoid lifting heavy weights with the donation arm or participating in strenuous physical activities or sports after donation to prevent bruising of the venepuncture site and dizziness.
Avoid doing any vigorous exercise or heavy lifting the day of your donation both before and after youve donated. Keeping your body in a rested state is important to give it a chance to replenish the fluids lost during donation, which will help you avoid feeling dizzy or lightheaded and keep you well.
Avoid fatty foods, such as a hamburger, fries or ice cream. Drink plenty of water before the donation. Check to see if any medications you are taking or recently took would prevent you from donating. For example, if you are a platelet donor, you must not take aspirin for two days prior to donating.
First of all, refrain from consuming fatty foods, as they can slow down the process as your body absorbs nutrients. Youll also want to consume foods high in sugar and salt in moderation, as they may not provide the essential nutrients needed for effective recovery.
