this is a great example of the proper way to remove a tick rather than trying to burn it or pour stuff over the top of it these tools get underneath the tick and allow you to pull straight up if it doesnt work by pulling straight up a great tip is to twist it like you see in this video perfect form because the person demonstrating this is also a board-certified dermatologist these tools are inexpensive and theyre easy to find on Amazon so if you do go into the backcountry very often its a good idea to have some of these available in case you find a tick on you

Touching it with a hot match is a common one. Others include covering it with petroleum jelly or nail polish (in theory to suffocate it), or freezing it off. These are all supposed to make the tick back out of the skin on its own.
Do not try to kill, smother, or lubricate the tick with oil, alcohol, petroleum jelly, or similar material while the tick is still embedded in the skin.
DONT put things like nail polish, vaseline or repellents on the tick to try to suffocate or kill it. This can cause the tick to vomit into your dog, increasing the possibility of infection.
Apply liquid soap to a cotton ball until its soaked and gently cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball for 30 seconds. The tick will stick to the cotton ball when you lift it away.
Myth 1: Use Petroleum Jelly Some sources on tick removal suggest that covering the embedded tick with petroleum jelly will suffocate the tick and force it to back out. The fact is, petroleum jelly does not force the tick to back out and may actually cause the tick to release additional toxins into your pets body.
Avoid using home remedy methods of tick removal, such as rubbing fingernail polish or vaseline petrolatum, using rubbing alcohol, or applying a hot extinguished match directly to the tick. In general, these methods do not result in tick detachment.
Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skins surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Dont twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers.
Submerging a tick in original Listerine or rubbing alcohol will kill it instantly.
No matter which tool youre using to remove the tick, always use a cotton ball soaked in either rubbing alcohol or liquid dish soap and place it on the tick.
To be safe, though, youll want to remove the tick as soon as possible. The risk of infection rises 2448 hours after the tick attaches to the skin.
