my name is Lisa mccurdy Im an attorney at Nixon Peabody in San Francisco Ive been involved in animal law issues for about five years now we just had a panel discussion today with the San Francisco Bar Association discussing animal custody issues the speakers were me bill shoke who is a pet guardian who was able to give us his personal accounts of a custody issue that arose in his life and Joyce Tishler who is the founder and general counsel of the animal legal defense fund the issue of pet custody specifically and really most issues that relate to animal law generally are framed by the fact that under the law in all 50 states animals are considered personal property and for any of us who have pets we know that they hold a much dearer place in our hearts than other types of property do cars tables chairs and and those sorts of things and so litigants and courts in particular are really faced with a difficult situation when custody disputes arise on one hand courts as early as the 1940

Tick bites can carry diseases, so its important to remove them straight away. When removing a tick, make sure not you dont squeeze the ticks body or leave the head in. If you squeeze its body or leave the head in, this can push blood back into your pet, which will increase the chance of them getting a disease.
What to Do If a Tick Head Is Stuck in Your Skin Grasp the tick head with sterile, fine-tipped tweezers. Firmly pull the tick head straight out, not at an angle. If you couldnt remove it with tweezers, sterilize a needle with rubbing alcohol. Use the needle to gently widen the hole where the head is embedded.
Never dig around in the skin to remove the remainder of the tick, as this can actually increase the risk of skin infections. Instead, its best to let nature take its course. Your dogs body will expel the tick out naturally by itself. To avoid the possibility of infection, apply an antibiotic ointment, as directed.
What Happens If a Ticks Head Is Not Removed? If a ticks head or mouthparts are left behind after tick removal, dont panic. Youve killed the tick and removed its body, preventing any serious risk of disease transmission. However, leftover parts can still lead to infection at the site of attachment.
No matter which tool youre using to remove the tick, always use a cotton ball soaked in either rubbing alcohol or liquid dish soap and place it on the tick.
A small, dark, black dot on your skin might indicate some tick parts are left lurking. If some time has passed since the initial bite and you still have parts of the tick in your skin, the area might have become irritated, causing tick parts to take on a red-black hue.
If you arent able to completely remove a ticks head, you should see a medical professional. A ticks head left under skin doesnt increase your risk of Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses, but it does increase your risk of some bacterial infections.
Gently pull the tick out with tweezers by grasping its head as close to the skin as possible. If the head remains, try to remove with a sterile needle. Wash the bite site with soap and water. Rubbing alcohol may be used to disinfect the area.
Spread your dogs fur apart so you can clearly see the tick. If your dog is uncooperative, it may be helpful to have a second person hold your dog or give him a treat or toy to focus on while you remove the tick. Grasp the tick with the tweezersas close to your dogs skin as possible.
Step 4: Cleanup and after-care Wash your hands, clean your pets wound with antiseptic and make sure to clean your tweezers with isopropyl alcohol. Keep an eye on the area where the tick was to see if an infection surfaces. If the skin remains irritated or infected, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
