(simple upbeat melody) So, this time of the year in the spring and summer every year, ticks come out. And the most common question we get in the spring and summer relates to tick bites and rashes. So, its very important to know what to do when youre bitten by a tick and the crucial thing is to get the tick off of you. We wanna get the tick removed as soon as possible because the longer the tick stays attached the more likely it is to transmit the Borrelia bacteria that cause Lyme disease. We often get asked what to do after a tick bite. And this question has really two aspects: one is should I take antibiotics to prevent Lyme disease after a tick bite? Thats called prophylaxis. Thats the administration of a single dose of antibiotics at the time you pull a tick off and that is an option that can be discussed with your physician. That option for prophylaxis with a single dose of antibiotic after a tick bite is different though than treating Lyme disease. The question about treating

If you find a tick attached to your skin, simply remove the tick as soon as possible. There are several tick removal devices on the market, but a plain set of fine-tipped tweezers works very well.
To be safe, though, youll want to remove the tick as soon as possible. The risk of infection rises 2448 hours after the tick attaches to the skin.
In general, ticks need to be attached for 36 to 48 hours before they can transmit Lyme disease bacteria. Most people are infected through the bites of immature ticks called nymphs. Nymphs are tiny (less than 2 mm) and difficult to see. They most commonly bite during spring and summer.
Remove Attached Ticks Quickly and Correctly If a tick is attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your chance of getting Lyme disease is extremely small; however, other diseases may be transmitted more quickly. Over the next few weeks, watch for signs or symptoms of Lyme disease such as rash or fever.
Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skins surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Dont twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers.
Erythema migrans (EM) rash (see photos): Occurs in approximately 70 to 80 percent of infected persons. Begins at the site of a tick bite after a delay of 3 to 30 days (average is about 7 days)
If you arent able to completely remove a ticks head, you should see a medical professional. A ticks head left under skin doesnt increase your risk of Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses, but it does increase your risk of some bacterial infections.
After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Flushing it down the toilet.
