The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You'll need to spray a section of the wall with water, let the water soak in and soften the texture, then scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife.
Use 150-grit sandpaper to get the high points then move to 220-grit to get it fairly smooth. Make sure not to apply too much pressure, or you may accidentally sand down into the drywall paper layer. Once the oil-based area texture is removed, prime and spray with a latex orange-peel texture spray.
How do you make a textured wall look modern? A textured wall can look modern with the right paint finish – matte paint in earthy colors will create a contemporary effect. If the textured finish you have isn't to your taste, a skim coat of plaster will cover it and it can be painted or wallpapered.
Choose a sandpaper that is 120 to 150 grit to ensure surface abrasion without damaging the drywall. If warm water removed most of the texture, a light sanding will likely smooth the wall surface. For plaster walls, it can take heavy continual sanding to remove the textured paint.
Taking texture off a wall is a messy and challenging job but it has to be done if you want the walls to be smooth and simple. So if you're planning on starting such a project, make sure you're well documented.

Give the surface a light once-over with fine sandpaper, sanding in a straight back-and-forth motion. If the surface is wood, use 400-grit paper. If it's metal, use 800 to 1,000-grit, depending on the condition of the orange peel. This light sanding will knock down the rough spots on the finish.
Skim coating drywall—also known as a level-five drywall finish—gives your walls a nearly perfectly smooth finish. It costs between $515 and $610 to skim coat a 468-square-foot space, equal to the average size of a main bedroom (12-by-14-foot room with 9-foot ceilings).
Sanding is another technique to remove texture. There are sanding pads that can be attached to shop vacuums, but if you are truly serious about removing the texture, you'll want to use a belt sander. Special precautions need to be made for the user's safety to use a belt sander on wall surfaces.
