The 457 plan is a retirement savings plan and you generally cannot withdraw money while you are still employed. When you leave employment, you may withdraw funds; leave them in place; transfer them to a 457, 403(b) or 401(k) of a new employer; or roll them into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
Planning retirement distributions For example, the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) allows for 401(k) withdrawals to begin penalty-free after age 59but the IRC also requires that you start taking distributions at age 73.
The New York City Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP) allows eligible New York City employees a way to save for retirement through convenient payroll deductions. DCP is comprised of two programs: a 457 Plan and a 401(k) Plan, both of which offer pre-tax and Roth (after-tax) options.
Is there a time when I must withdraw money from my Deferred Compensation Plan? If you have separated from service with New York State or a participating employer, you must begin receiving payments no later than April 1 following the close of the calendar year in which you turn age 72.
You can continue to invest with the Program when you leave your public employer and throughout retirement. Under this option, you can withdraw money without penalty, regardless of your age (all withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes).
The CalPERS 457 Plan is a retirement savings plan. Generally, you cannot withdraw money from your plan account while you are still employed by your employer. You may, however, make Emergency withdrawals for specific financial hardships prior to separation from employment.
You can take out small or large sums anytime, or you can set up automatic, periodic payments. If your plan allows it, you may be able to have direct deposit which allows for fast transfer of funds. Unlike a check, direct deposit typically doesnt include a hold on the funds from your account.
As always, you can speak with a Deferred Compensation Plan Customer Service Representative about the Plan and your account(s) on the phone by calling at (212) 306-7760.
