If this is not overwhelming enough, the IRS initially penalizes the taxpayer with a $270 penalty for the TIN discrepancy. But it doesnt stop there. This penalty will continue to accrue interest until the case is validated and deemed void by the IRS or until you file the correct returns with accurate information.
If you discover that you filed a 1099 with the incorrect payer name, address, and/or taxpayer identification number (TIN), you must write a letter to the IRS/ECC-MTB to correct the form. The letter must contain the following information: Name and address of payer.
If any of the info showing on Form W-9 needs changing, you wont be able to change it in account hub. Rather, youll need to send us a revised Form W-9. This includes when you initially enroll with a bank as well as subsequent to being approved by the bank.
If submitting this W-9 as an individual, you should enter the name shown on your tax return. If you have changed your last name without informing the Social Security Administration (SSA), enter your first name, the last name as shown on your Social Security card and your new last name.
Intentional Disregard: If a payer is found to have intentionally disregarded the requirement to furnish correct payee statements, penalties of up to $630 per return may apply. Penalties can quickly become expensive if you file large amounts of name/TIN combinations with missing or invalid information.
Payees that are exempt from backup withholding, such as corporations (in most cases), might need to enter a code in the Exempt payee code box. The Form W-9 instructions list the exempt payees and their codes and the types of payments for which these codes should be used.
The payer is required to withhold 24% of a reportable payment if the TIN is not provided at the time of the payment. IRS sends a CP2100 or CP2100A, Notice of Possible Payee TIN Discrepancy, to payers if the TIN/name combination on the information return does not match IRS tax records.
5% of the amount due: From the original due date of your tax return.
