Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the birth canal. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are much more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose higher risks than others. About 70% of all cases are caused by just two types: HPV-16 and HPV-18. Two proteins produced by HPV, known as E6 and E7, interfere with cell functions that normally prevent excessive cell division. They may take a small tissue sample (a biopsy) to check any areas of your cervix which look unusual. If the colposcopy confirms there are abnormal cells on your cervix, you may need to have them removed to help prevent cervical cancer.
You can resume almost all of your normal activities right after surgery. For 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery, you will have a lot of watery discharge caused by the shedding (sloughing) of the dead cervical tissue. You may need to avoid sexual intercourse and using tampons for several weeks.
LLETZ involves using a heated wire loop to remove the abnormal cells, and in the majority of cases is carried out using a local anaesthetic. The procedure lasts a few minutes and can be carried out during a colposcopy. Removing abnormal cervical cells is usually successful (about a 90% success rate).
Treatment for high-grade cervical cell changes Laser therapy uses a laser (narrow beam of intense light) to remove or destroy abnormal tissue. Cryotherapy uses a special cold probe to destroy abnormal tissue by freezing it. Total hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix.
Treatment simply involves removing the abnormal tissue from your cervix. Most of the treatments are done under local anaesthetic and are very low risk. Even with more complex treatments, complications from things like anaesthetics, infections or bleeding are rare, but can happen.
The procedure can be done in different ways: Using a surgical blade (cold knife cone biopsy) Using a laser beam (laser conization) Using a thin wire heated by electricity (the loop electrosurgical excision procedure, LEEP or LEETZ procedure).
An electrically charged loop made of thin wire is inserted through the speculum and up to the cervix. As the loop is passed across the cervix, it cuts away a thin layer of surface tissue, removing the abnormal cells. This tissue is then sent to the lab to be tested for abnormal cells.
A procedure in which a small brush is used to gently remove cells from the surface of the cervix and the area around it so they can be checked under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.
