The drug drop box is the most effective, efficient, secure, and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your out of date or unused Rx and OTC drugs. In Georgia drug drop boxes are located in Sheriffs and Police Departments across the state in 153 counties.
In your community, authorized collection sites may be retail, hospital, or clinic pharmacies; and/or law enforcement facilities. These collection sites may offer on-site medicine drop-off boxes; mail back programs; or other in-home disposal methods to assist you in safely disposing of your unused or expired medicines.
Pharmaceutical waste (such as painkillers), medical waste (such as syringes or surgical gloves) and containers for medicines may possibly be returned to your local pharmacy, which can dispose of them properly. Many pharmacies may take back unwanted or expired medicines, but they are not legally obliged to do so.
Consumers from anywhere in New Jersey can visit the boxes seven days a week, to drop off unneeded and expired medications - and keep them away from those at risk of abusing them. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals such as pills, capsules, patches, inhalers, and pet medications.
How do you get rid of medicines? Take the medicine out of the container it came in. Mix the medicine with a substance that doesnt taste good, such as cat litter, sawdust, or coffee grounds. Place the mixture in some other container, such as a sealed plastic bag or can. Put that container in your household trash.
All medicines, including controlled drugs, must be promptly returned to a community pharmacy. Pharmacies are contractually obliged to dispose of medicines waste for these services. The service does not require a T28 waste exemption as the pharmacy will denature the controlled drugs.
Return unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs to pharmaceutical take-back locations for safe disposal. Ask your local pharmacy or law enforcement agency about pharmaceutical take-back programs. Take unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs out of their original containers.
The best way to dispose of most types* of unused or expired medicines (both prescription and over the counter) is to drop off the medicine at a drug take back site, location, or program immediately.
Unopened, unused and out-of-date medicines should be returned to pharmacies for disposal. The cardboard box that houses the blister packs can be recycled, as can any paper inserts. Inhalers should not be put in the waste bin as they contain gases which are harmful to the environment.
Once you find a participating CVS location, simply bring in your unneeded or expired medication and place it in the drug take back unit conveniently located in the Pharmacy Waiting Area. Units are available during regular pharmacy hours.
