10 Common Grant Writing Mistakes to Avoid to a Successful Grant Proposal Failure to introduce yourself. The problem and narrative is unclear. Objectives are not well defined. Not following simple instructions. Lack of evaluation. Incomplete or missing answers to application questions.
Here are the six questions (in order) that I find to be the most helpful when editing a grant proposal: WERE THE QUESTIONS ANSWERED? WAS THE EVALUATION CRITERIA MET? HOWS THE GRAMMAR, SPELLING, WRITING STYLE? IS THE PROPOSAL ALIGNED WITH THE APPLICATION? WERE ALL FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS MET?
If everything is set correctly, you should find no more than 60 lines of text on each page per 8.5x11 page with 0.5 margins. NIH requires the use of a font that is at least 11 pt in size and generally recommends the use of either Arial, Georgia, Helvetica, or Palatino Linotype.
Page size and margins: Use paper size no larger than standard letter paper size (8 x 11). Provide at least one-half inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right) for all pages.
NIH requires the use of a font that is at least 11 pt in size and generally recommends the use of either Arial, Georgia, Helvetica, or Palatino Linotype. However, they also go on to state that there must be no more than 15 characters per linear inch (including characters and spaces).
A grant proposal should never use negative writing; it should instead use persuasiveness framed in a positive manner. This positions the reviewer to think positively about your idea, and at the end of the day, recommend it for funding.
Our rules for font prevent applicants from side-stepping application page limits by requiring: 11-point font size or larger. No more than 15 characters per linear inch (including spaces) No more than 6 lines per vertical inch.
Line spacing As long as you have 6 or fewer lines per vertical inch (view ruler will allow you to manually check), you are set by NIH guidelines. The default line spacing in MS Word is 1.08.
