Keep your bandage on and dry for the next five hours. If you have bleeding after removing the bandage, put pressure on the site and raise your arm until the bleeding stops. If bruising occurs, apply a cold pack to the area periodically during the first 24 hours.
Post-donation care To help you stay well after you have given blood, we recommend the following: Keep the bandage on for at least 4 hours after donation. Have something to eat and drink at the refreshment area before leaving. Avoid drinking alcoholic drinks until the next day.
Who cannot donate blood? Having a fever (above 99.5F) or an acute infection at the time of donation, or feeling unwell, having a cold, flu, or trouble breathing. Pregnancy. High blood pressure reading (top number above 180, or bottom number above 100)
You can remove the bandage from your arm within a few hours of the donation. Use soap and water to gently clean the area around the injection site. If the site starts to bleed, apply pressure and hold your arm straight up for 10 minutes, or until bleeding subsides.
You can reduce the risk of bruising by keeping the bandage on your arm for 2 hours after donating, and by avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous use of your arm for the next 24 hours.
After Donating Blood The sterile bandage should remain in place for at least 30 minutes after donating the blood. The following advice is useful for patients after giving blood: Avoid carrying anything heavy after blood donation. Try not to take a hot water shower immediately after donating blood.
In general, use a 16-gauge needle (see Table 3.1 in Chapter 3), which is usually attached to the blood collection bag. Use of a retractable needle or safety needle with a needle cover is preferred if available, but all should be cut off at the end of the procedure (as described in step 6, below) rather than recapped.
Red cells and platelets are leuko-reduced, which means your white cells are removed in order to reduce the possibility of the recipient having a reaction to the transfusion. Each component is packaged as a unit, a standardized amount that doctors will use when transfusing a patient.
