The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. In addition to several provisions for general welfare, the new Act created a social insurance program designed to pay retired workers age 65 or older a continuing income after retirement.
In 1943, Executive Order (EO) 9397 required Federal agencies to use the SSN in any new system of records to identify persons.
The nine-digit Social Security Number is broken into 3 parts - the Area, Group, and Series. The Area number is the first three digits of a Social Security Number, the Group number is the middle two digits and the Series number is the final four digits.
The serial number ranges from 0001 to 9999 and is assigned consecutively within each group number. As you can see, your social security number does not expressly say anything about you.
The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
Since 1973, social security numbers have been issued by our central office. The first three (3) digits of a persons social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number.
So were not in danger of running out of them anytime soon, and your number is yours to keep. Forever. An FAQ on the agencys website says it will not reassign your number even after you die.
The lowest area numbers are assigned to New Hampshire, rather than to Maine, even though Maine in the most northeasterly of the states. This was apparently done so that SSN 001-01-0001 could be given to New Hampshires favorite son, Social Security Board Chairman John G.
