Employers may ask for a Social Security number before youve been hired, but its not mandatory to provide it, ing to the Society of Human Resource Management. When you are hired, you will need to provide your Social Security number so your employer can do a background check.
When it comes to the social security number on job application question, lets get one thing out of the way upfront: it is not illegal for an employer to ask you for your social security number (SSN). However, you are in no way obligated to provide your SSN if you feel the employers request is unreasonable.
People generally cannot voluntarily withdraw or stop participating in the Social Security program. You must pay Social Security taxes, regardless of you or your employers citizenship or place of residence.
A dishonest person who has your Social Security number can use it to get other personal information about you. Identity thieves can use your number and your good credit to apply for more credit in your name. Then, when they use the credit cards and dont pay the bills, it damages your credit.
Anyone can refuse to disclose his or her number, but the requester can refuse its services if you do not give it. Businesses, banks, schools, private agencies, etc., are free to request someones number and use it for any purpose that does not violate a federal or state law.
This is done by calling our National 800 number (Toll Free 1-800-772-1213 or at our TTY number at 1-800-325-0778). Once requested, any automated telephone and electronic access to your Social Security record is blocked.
Under the Internal Revenue Service (sic) Code, the IRS may charge you a $50 penalty for each time you do not furnish an employees correct SSN on a wage report. . . . The IRS may impose [this penalty] unless you . . . can show reasonable cause for not providing the correct information. (Emphasis added.)
Why do employers need my social security number? If an employer decides to extend you an offer, they will eventually need your social security number to verify your identity and work authorization and perhaps to complete a background check.
