Opting back in If you want to start paying into your employers workplace pension again, you can do so. You need to write to your employer to request to be enrolled. Your employer has to accept you back into their workplace pension once in every twelve month period.
You can stop your contributions to the Scheme at any time: These rules are set by the government and enforced by The Pensions Regulator. If you ask to stop contributing to the Scheme within the first calendar month of being enrolled, youll opt out of the Scheme and your employer will refund your contributions.
From 1 April 2023, all members will have the option to retire and re-join the pension scheme. If you are not ready to stop work altogether, you can retire and take your full pension, then return to work after a break of at least 24 hours and re-join the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme to earn further benefits.
If you opt out, youll be automatically enrolled back into NEST by the same employer every three years, as long as youre still eligible. You may also be automatically enrolled again if you change employers.
Once the member has opted out, no further contributions should be deducted from their pay. As long as the member has opted out within the first calendar month, they may be eligible for an opt-out refund of their previous contributions.
If you dont want to wait to be re-enrolled, you can ask to re-join. You can ask at any time. But your employer only has to action a request to re-join once every 12 months. This is because every time a member leaves or re-joins a scheme, there are administration costs for the employer.
Youll only get back the contributions youve made. You wont get the contributions your employer might have made, or any tax relief. If you decide to opt out more than one month after youve been set up in your employers workplace pension, any contributions youve made will usually be held in the scheme.
Statements and warnings The notice should include the following just above their signature: I wish to opt out of the pension scheme. I understand that if I opt out I will lose the right to pension contributions from my employer. I understand that if I opt out I may have a lower income when I retire.
