In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection.
There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.
If the results of your Pap test come back positive, that means your doctor found abnormal or unusual cells on your cervix. It doesnt mean you have cervical cancer. Most often, the abnormal test result means there have been cell changes caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).
Once abnormal cells are identified, your doctor performs a biopsy, taking a small amount of tissue for testing. Youll feel a pinch, nothing more. Then, your cells are off to the lab for analysis. You might experience some mild cramping after colposcopy, but thats it.
Also called loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), this is the most common way of treating precancerous changes of the cervix. The abnormal tissue is removed using a thin wire loop that is heated electrically. The aim is to remove all the abnormal cells from the surface of the cervix.
Most abnormal Pap smear results are nothing to worry about Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as abnormal. In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but its important to follow up to make sure.
Self-sampling enables women to collect their own sample for cervical screening without a speculum using a vaginal swab or brush. A drawback is the consistent finding that women worry about not self-sampling correctly.
