Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the birth canal. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are much more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose higher risks than others. LEEP stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. Its a treatment that prevents cervical cancer. A small electrical wire loop is used to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. LEEP surgery may be performed after abnormal cells are found during a Pap test, colposcopy, or biopsy.
You should expect to experience some virginal bleeding or discharge immediately for about four weeks after treating abnormal cervical cells. Typically, vaginal bleeding or discharge after treatment of abnormal pap smears is normal but how long it should last depends on the treatment method.
If there are moderate to severe changes in your cervix, your doctor may want to remove the cervical tissue. Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure.
If your biopsy results indicate the presence of precancerous cells or a type of HPV thats more likely to cause cancer, your doctor may suggest treating the area using cryosurgery. During this simple outpatient procedure, your doctor uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the precancerous cells.
Possible causes of abnormal Pap smear results Hormonal changes from pregnancy or menopause. Infection, like a yeast infection. Inflammation. Noncancerous cysts or growths. Smoking or tobacco use. Other health conditions, like an autoimmune disorder or diabetes.
A positive HPV test means you do have an HPV type that may be linked to cervical cancer. This does not mean you have cervical cancer now. But it could be a warning. The specific HPV type may be identified to determine the next step.
