The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) entitles employees to five days of unpaid bereavement leave. Bereavement leave (sometimes called grievance pay) is time off of work given to eligible employees after the death of a family member or a loved one.
We offer a minimum of five paid days of time off for the death of a loved one to attend funeral or memorial arrangements, resolve financial matters such as inheritance or estate affairs, or personal mourning. If travel is required, two extra days of unpaid leave can be taken, provided proof of travel arrangements.
As referred to above, although statutory rights to time off for a funeral are limited, it is common for employers to allow time off for a funeral irrespective of the relationship between the person wishing to attend the funeral and the person who has died.
Bereavement leave is time off granted to an employee in the event that a loved one passes away. The intention is to allow employees to grieve, attend funeral services or a memorial, or deal with financial and legal matters that may come up after death.
Tell or email your boss that a family member passed away. For instance, you can say something like: I just wanted to docHub out and let you know that my uncle recently passed away, and Ill need 3-5 days off to be with my family and attend the funeral.
Whether a funeral is an excused absence for work depends on the circumstances and the employers policies. In most cases, attending a funeral is an excused absence from work, but employers may have different rules. Depending on the employer, a funeral may be considered a paid or unpaid leave of absence.
As referred to above, although statutory rights to time off for a funeral are limited, it is common for employers to allow time off for a funeral irrespective of the relationship between the person wishing to attend the funeral and the person who has died.
There is no right way to use your bereavement time. For instance, many people want to take time off immediately, but it may be a better decision to wait until the funeral is being planned to give that your full attention. As soon as you are able, you should discuss your options with your manager or HR department.
