An AMI includes the following: One or more snapshots. Instance-store-backed AMIs include a template for the root volume of the instance (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications). Launch permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI to launch instances.
Snapshots are best for data backups, they are cheaper, and incremental snapshots are possible too. Images are best for infrastructure re-use, such as exporting a VM image for use in a different project or as the basis for a Managed Instance Group.
By default, when you create an AMI from an instance, snapshots are taken of each EBS volume attached to the instance. AMIs can launch with multiple EBS volumes attached, allowing you to replicate both an instances configuration and the state of all the EBS volumes that are attached to that instance.
You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI. You cant delete a snapshot that is managed by the AWS Backup service using Amazon EC2.
On the Snapshots page, select a snapshot to remove. In the bottom pane, click Delete. A confirmation window appears. Click Yes to continue deleting the snapshot or click No to stop the deletion.
The maximum retention period currently available for automated snapshots is 35 days. When automated backups are turned on for your DB Instance, Amazon RDS automatically performs a full, daily snapshot of your data and captures transaction logs.
Delete an image Select the check box next to the Version for any image that you want to delete. You can select more than one image version at a time. At the top of the Image build versions panel, choose Delete version. To confirm the deletion, enter Delete in the box, and choose Delete.
Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon RDS console at . In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots. The Manual snapshots list appears. Choose the DB snapshot that you want to delete. For Actions, choose Delete snapshot. Choose Delete on the confirmation page.
In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots. Select a snapshot to delete (look for the AMI ID from the prior step in the Description column). Choose Actions, Delete snapshot. When prompted for confirmation, choose Delete.
A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but its for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non-ebs backed instance, but you can create an AMI (system image) of one.
