A pay for delete letter is a negotiation tool intended to get negative information removed from your credit report. Its most commonly used when a person still owes a balance on a negative account. Essentially, it entails asking a creditor to remove the negative information in exchange for paying the balance.
If you did apply for a credit account or authorize a hard inquiry, you cant remove it from your reports. It remains on your credit reports as part of an accurate representation of your credit history. If thats the case, it should fall off your reports after about two years.
If you spot a hard inquiry on your credit report, dont sweat it too much. Its there because your credit was pulled by an issuer or lender when you applied for a credit card or loan. And if your credit score does get dinged from it, its OK. It can bounce back in a few months if you use your card responsibly.
The fastest way to remove hard inquiries from a credit report is to file a formal dispute. Credit bureaus will sometimes remove the disputed record right away while they conduct an investigation, at which time it will either be reinstated or removed permanently.
One way is to go directly to the creditor by sending them a certified letter in the mail. In your letter, be sure to point out which inquiry (or inquiries) were not authorized, and then request that those inquiries be removed. You could also contact the 3 big credit bureaus where the unauthorized inquiry has shown up.
In most cases, hard inquiries have very little if any impact on your credit scoresand they have no effect after one year from the date the inquiry was made. So when a hard inquiry is removed from your credit reports, your scores may not improve muchor see any movement at all.
Hard inquiries are taken off of your credit reports after two years. But your credit scores may only be affected for a year, and sometimes it might only be for a few months. Soft inquiries will only stay on your credit reports for 12-24 months. And remember: Soft inquiries wont affect your credit scores.
