The answer is yes and this video will give you 12 recommendations on how to respond to a write-up. (light upbeat music) My name is Branigan Robertson and Im an employment attorney. The 12 recommendations that Im going to make in this video will help you respond to a write-up so that you can, number one, minimize the risk of being fired and number two, legally protect yourself in case the company fires you in the future. But before we can get into any of that, we need to get three very important things out of the way. Number one, the amazing thing about YouTube is that we get to learn from each other.

It is best to respond in writing and for you to keep a copy. You should include your version of events and how you intend to remedy the problem or arrange a meeting with your employer to discuss this with you. If you believe a warning is unfair, you should give a full explanation of why.
If an employee is written-up and disputes the statement in the write-up, the employee may be able to submit a written rebuttal that can be filed alongside the write-up. This provides the employee an opportunity to have their dispute officially recorded.
Many bosses decide they want someone terminated and then start writing them up for anything and everything they can find. If you get written up more than once and the reasons seem weak or unnecessary, then this is a docHub red flag that you will soon be terminated. You get excluded.

The decision to remove a document from the personnel file is generally at the discretion of management. In certain limited circumstances, an employee may be entitled to request to remove a document. The request must be made in writing and directed to the supervisor.
Answer: No, but Refusing to Sign a Write-Up Can Lead to Consequences. Your employer cant force you to sign the performance document, but there may be consequences for refusing to do so. For one, your employer could fire you for refusing to sign.
If the employer wants to maintain a record of the write-up but does not want it to have any impact on the employee or the employment relationship, it can leave the write-up in the employees personnel file and attach a note to it explaining that it has been effectively (though perhaps not physically) removed.
