Name-dropping in your cover letter is the process of mentioning a mutual contact you share with the hiring manager, and you are using it as a referral for your job application. This shared connection can be a friend, networking acquaintance, or anyone else you know.
So if you know someone who works for a company youre applying to, dont be afraid to mention their name in your cover letter. Many businesses actually encourage and reward their employees for referring job candidates.
What if you cannot track down a contact name for your cover email? Use a generic salutation, such as Dear Hiring Manager, Dear Recruiting Manager or Dear Human Resources Professional. (Avoid To Whom It May Concern; it is antiquated.) Another option is to write Greetings, which is somewhat informal but polite.
