Approximately 40%80% of CRBSIs are caused by gram-positive organisms. Coagulase-negative Staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus are the most common organisms. Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus is frequently seen. 20%30% of infections CRBSIs are caused by gram-negative organisms[5].
A PICC infection is caused by bacteria on a central line catheter. From the catheter, they can get into the bloodstream. This can happen from bacteria that normally live on the skin.
PICCs are associated with CLABSIs. An infection due to the PICC occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream through or around the catheter.
Use chlorhexidine for skin preparation. Use full-barrier precautions during central venous catheter insertion. Avoid using the femoral vein for catheters in adult patients. Remove unnecessary catheters.
They are temporary central venous catheters inserted percutaneously and account for most CLABSIs. Within 7 to 10 days of central venous catheter placement, bacteria on the skin surface migrate along the external surface of the catheter from the skin exit site towards the intravascular space.
PICC-related bloodstream infections (BSI) rates of 2.1 per 1000 catheter-days in hospitalized patients and 1.0 per 1000 catheter-days in outpatient setting are reported [11]. Recent studies suggest that PICC-related BSI are less frequent than with other CVCs [1214].
What are some of the things that healthcare providers are doing to prevent CLABSI? Perform hand hygiene. Apply appropriate skin antiseptic. Ensure that the skin prep agent has completely dried before inserting the central line. Use all five maximal sterile barrier precautions: Sterile gloves. Sterile gown. Cap. Mask.
