What is control number on W-2?

A Control Number (box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system.

Can I remove a W-2 from TurboTax?

If searching for a W-2, for example, typing W-2 in the search bar and selecting the Jump to link in the search results takes you to the Your W-2 info so far screen. You can remove the W-2 on this screen by selecting the trash icon.

What if my W-2 doesnt have a control number in box D?

Box D on a W-2 is where an employer can choose to enter an identification number for its own use. It is optional for the employer, and it is not important for the employee. You leave the box blank. Not every employer uses control numbers and they are not required in order to file your taxes.

Can you leave lines blank on 1040?

You will not necessarily have anything to add to some of the lines, simply leave them blank if they dont apply. If you did not receive a form 1099, or other federal form reporting that a certain type of income was paid to you, you likely did not have that type of income.

How do I find my W-2 control number?

The Control Number on W-2 wage statement (Box D) is often found below or near the employers name and address, but it may be located in a different place or not present at all. The location of the Control Number on a specific W-2 can vary due to the different formats used by various employers.

Is the control number required on W-2?

Per the IRS general instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 returns, the control number is an optional box that you can use for numbering the whole transmittal. Accounting CS populates this field automatically with a unique number for filing purposes.
