On the File tab, choose Options > Mail. Under Compose messages, in the Compose messages in this format list, click HTML, Plain Text, or Rich Text.
Use File → Save As... and select the option that allows you to save the file as a Text Document — rather than Rich Text Format (RTF), which is the default.
Clear Formatting Highlight the portion of the spreadsheet from which you want to remove formatting. Click the Home tab. Select Clear from the Editing portion of the Home tab. From the drop down menu of the Clear button, select Clear Formats.
Clear All Formatting Select the text with the formatting you want to clear. Select Home > Clear All Formatting. or press Ctrl + Spacebar.
A Rich Text Document (. rtf file) is a versatile format that allows advanced formatting to be viewed on multiple platforms. Please note that RTFs, unlike PDFs, are easily edited.
Use Ctrl + A to select all text in a document and then click the Clear All Formatting button to remove the formatting from the text (aka character level formatting.) You can also select just a few paragraphs and use the same method to remove formatting from part of a document.
A plain text file is a document that contains no formatting, images, colors or other types of markup. It also includes single line breaks and spacing. A rich text file is the default format of popular word-processors like Microsoft Word, Apple Pages and Notes, a Google Doc, and even HTML emails.
Find a desired location to save the file. From within the Save As Window, find the Save File Type field. Select the drop-down arrow, and change the file from Rich Text Format (rtf) to Word Document (doc). Select Save.
Unlike DOCX files, you cannot embed macros in RTF files. That means zero worries about computer viruses that spread through macros. Do note this does not mean an RTF file will be 100% secure. Another good reason to use RTF is Microsoft holds the patent for DOCX implementation.
Use File → Save As... and select the option that allows you to save the file as a Text Document — rather than Rich Text Format (RTF), which is the default. TextEdit on the Mac. Use the Make Plain Text command in the Format menu before saving the file.
