However, CMS is removing 2 additional CPT codes that had not been included in the proposed rule: CPT 47550 and 21255.
Changes to the Inpatient Only List. Since the beginning of the OPPS, the Inpatient Only (IPO) list has defined the list of services that, due to their medical complexity, Medicare will only pay for when performed in the inpatient setting.
An Inpatient Only surgery list is released every year by CMS. These procedures are automatically approved for Part A coverage and must be performed in a hospital. All other surgeries, as long as there are no complications, are covered by Part B.
The IPO list includes procedures that Medicare will pay for only when care takes place in a hospital inpatient setting. Last years Final Rule established a plan to eliminate the list completely over a three-year phase-in period. In addition, CMS removed 298 services from the IPO list for 2021.
