When do you get it? You should receive a P800 at the end of every tax year and this should inform you of any refunds you are eligible for. These are delivered to you automatically within around five working days, but you could also receive a cheque within around 14 days, although it can take longer.
The IRS may reverse the offset and issue the OBR, as the incomplete Form 3753 submitted before the offset occurred was a clerical error that prevented the processing of the OBR request.
An offset is when the federal income tax refund you would have received is used to pay all or a portion of a debt owing to a federal or state agency. If the full amount owed is not collected in one year, future offsets may be done to satisfy your debt.
If HMRC think you have overpaid tax, they will send you a repayment of tax automatically you do not need to make a claim. If HMRC think you have not paid enough tax, they will write to you explaining that they intend to collect the underpaid tax through your tax code or telling you how you can repay it to them.
If you think HMRC has not calculated your tax correctly, let them know. You can do this by telephone, or in writing. There is no formal procedure to appeal, but you can object and ask for an explanation of their figure. If you find there are mistakes, write to your tax office pointing these out.
