Unauthorised absence is when someone does not come to work and either: has not got permission from their employer beforehand. does not follow the organisations policy for reporting an unexpected absence for example someone is off sick but does not tell their employer.

By law, dismissal for sickness absence should be seen as a measure of last resort. If an employee is on long-term sick leave, for a dismissal to be fair, you must prove you have taken all reasonable steps to support the employee in their return to work.
