How to Remove authentication in PAP

There are many different ways to provide authentication to a network. And in this video, well look at two very common methods. One is called PAP and the other is CHAP. This is a common problem that needs to be solved. You have a client whos outside of the building they are accessing a VPN concentrator that is part of your organization. So that they can then gain access to an internal file server. But before theyre allowed access to that internal file server, they first need to authenticate. Theyre going to send a request through the internet to the VPN concentrator to login. The VPN concentrator doesnt have any information about usernames and passwords. So it passes that request down to AAA server. This is a server designed to provide authentication, authorization and accounting. And its going to provide a way to check a username and password to see if its valid. Once it performs that check itll send a message back saying those credentials have been approved or disapproved. Password Authentication Protocol, or PAP, and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol, or CHAP, are both used to authenticate PPP sessions and can be used with many VPNs. PAP works like a standard login procedure. The remote system authenticates itself by using a static username and password combination.
PPP Authentication The login command prompts the user for a name and password. login then attempts to authenticate the user by looking up the typed user name and password in the password database. If the database contains the user name and password, then the user is authenticated and given access to the system.
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
Getting a Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) Authentication Failed error message means that your modem or router may not have the correct settings to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
The password authentication protocol sends data in plain text, which can then be vulnerable to packet sniffer attacks where bad actors intercept network traffic, are able to view the PPP session, and can steal usernames and passwords.
EAP-TTLS/PAP is the most insecure 802.1x Authentication Protocol because credentials are sent over the air in plaintext. This means that every time someone connects to your organization's Wi-Fi, they can be stolen over the air.
After the connection has been established, PPP allows for an optional Authentication step.
PAP uses a two-way handshake process where the client sends their credentials to the server, the server verifies them, and the user is authenticated.
Use the show interfaces serial command to verify proper configuration of HDLC or PPP encapsulation.
There are three basic types of authentication. The first is knowledge-based — something like a password or PIN code that only the identified user would know. The second is property-based, meaning the user possesses an access card, key, key fob or authorized device unique to them. The third is biologically based.
