The image title attributes should be used in a complementary way for the image file names. An image filename is prominent for Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization. Image file names provide information, and context for the purpose of the image.
Image title is basically the name of your image. Like alt text, it lets users and search engines know whats in the picture. Unlike alt text, the image title is not displayed when the image is missing or not loaded properly. Instead, it is displayed when the user hovers their mouse over the image.
All images must have an ALT tag (aka ALT attribute). However, for decorative images, the ALT tag should be empty (a single empty space works, too). Screen readers and other technologies will recognize an empty ALT tag, identify the image as decorative and skip over it.
If you have an image and youre unable to identify details regarding copyright (such as the creator, the title or source), you can try a reverse image search using Google Images to locate the citation and source information for the image. Open Google Images and click on the camera icon.
That being said, the image title is not used for search ranking, so it is not quite as important to optimize for. But if youre an obsessive SEO completionist and want to optimize everything for the best in W3C optimization, by all means, do include both the alt text and title text for your image.
You should add alt text to most images on a webpage for the sake of SEO, UX, and accessibility however, there are exceptions. Images that are purely decorative or are described in text nearby, for example, should have an empty alt attribute.
The tag is used to embed an image in an HTML page. Images are not technically inserted into a web page; images are linked to web pages. The tag creates a holding space for the referenced image.
Images you use should have an alt text. Not just for SEO purposes, but also for accessibility. Because people using a screen reader will otherwise not know what the image is about. One thing to note, however, is that not every single image needs to have an alt text.
Aim for 70-100 characters long (roughly 12 words) Do not stuff in variations of your keywords. Ensure it describes what is in the image, not just what you want to rank for.
In the context of the image tag, alt text is used to describe visual elements to users who cant see them, either because the image failed to load or because they are using a screen-reader. The image title attribute is only visible on mouse-over and displays just the image title.
