A data contract defines the structure, format, semantics, quality, and terms of use for exchanging data between a data provider and their consumers. A data contract is implemented by a data products output port or other data technologies.
In fact, thats the difference between a data contract and a schema. A schema describes the structure of the data, primarily for databases and other tools so they can use and store the data effectively. A data contract provides the data with business context.
What is the difference between a data contract vs data catalog? A data contract defines and enforces schema and semantic meaning in a prescriptive way to prevent changes that break downstream data assets whereas data catalogs define schemas and semantics in a descriptive manner in order to build shared understanding.
A schema is only one element of a data contract. A data contract specifies and supports the following aspects of an agreement: Structure. This is the part of the contract that is covered by the schema, which defines the fields and their types.
Unlike a schema or specification (eg. OAS), which is a static artefact that describes all possible states of a resource, a Pact contract is enforced by executing a collection of test cases, each of which describes a single concrete request/response pair - Pact is, in effect, contract by example.
