Women ages 21 to 29 should get a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30 to 65 should have a Pap test combined with an HPV test every five years. Some women with certain conditions may need more frequent testing, including women with a history of cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS or a weakened immune system.
Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade). Most of the time, minor changes go back to normal on their own.
Treatment choices include: Cone biopsy. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), which uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal cervical cells. Cryotherapy, which destroys abnormal cervical cells by freezing them. Laser therapy, which uses a laser beam to destroy abnormal cervical cells.
An inadequate cervical smear test result simply means that the swab sample did not contain enough cells to provide an accurate result. Youll need to repeat the smear test, usually in three months time, to give the surface of your cervix enough time to regenerate enough cells.
When you hear that your Pap smear results were abnormal, you might feel some anxiety. Although worry is a common and normal reaction, its important to know that your test results merely showed that you have an infection or unusual cells known as dysplasia. None of this means you have cancer.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
Smears must be fixed immediately before they dry. A 95% solution of ethyl alcohol or spray fixative is used to fix the slide. The slides should be labeled in pencil with the patients name AND date of birth and a properly completed Pap smear requisition should accompany the slide.
Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as abnormal. In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but its important to follow up to make sure.
