How often do you need to renew your ITIN? Your ITIN remains valid as long as its used at least once every three years for filing US taxes. Without usage for three consecutive years, it expires on December 31 of the third year.
How to Renew an ITIN From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. Click Basic Information in the Federal Quick QA Topics menu to expand, then click Form W-7 - ITIN Application. Click + Add Form W-7 to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to review a form already created.
You can confirm if your ITIN is active by visiting an IRS-authorized CAA, or by visiting your local IRS TAC.
After you receive your new SSN, you will have to send a letter to the IRS ITIN Unit requesting a rescindment of your ITIN. The SSN will become the primary number and must be used for all future filing purposes. The IRS will void the ITIN. All prior tax information under the ITIN will be associated with the new SSN.
ITIN Processing with the IRS If you have not received your ITIN or other correspondence six weeks after applying, call the IRS toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040 to request the status of your application if you are in the United States.
If a person obtains an ITIN but does not include it on a federal tax return for three consecutive years, it will expire and will need to be revalidated. ITINs with a middle digit between 70 and 87 have expired.
Call the IRS. The best number to call is (+1) 800-829-4933. When you hear the various menu options, select option 1 for English or 2 for Spanish, then option 1 for EIN inquiries, and then option 3. You can call during IRS Business hours: 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5).
In addition, the IRS will send out whats called a CP48 Notice, letting you know that your number is set to expire this year. If you received one of these letters from the IRS last year or any year before, it means that your ITIN has expired.
