We recommend using a tung oil for oak surfaces. This type of oil will maintain the oaks colour as well as character. However, if you would like to darken the oak, hardwax oil is more ideal. Another popular oil for oak is danish oil.
Brush on Thick Paste Finish Remover, Letting the Chemical Work. Use a Wide Putty Knife and Scrape off the Finish. Apply Liquid Stripper and Use Steel Wool to Lift Remnants. Wash Away Waxy Stripper Residue with Lacquer Thinner. Use a Finishing Sander to Smooth the Surface. Apply Matching Stain, Letting It Dry for 24 Hours.
You can sand, prime and paint laminate as if it were a solid wood piece of furniture! Its easy to skip the sanding step, because sanding is a drag but its especially important with laminate. Because its often somewhat glossy-looking, and important to sand it down until the finish is very dull before priming.
When its time to paint, make sure to select a high-quality water-based enamel paint, which will give you a hard finish thats similar to an oil paint. Kitchen tables take a beating, and youll need a paint that can withstand plates, cups and all sorts of other objects banging it every single day.
The key to re-staining a wood dining table top without having to strip off the original factory finish is to create a soft, faux wood grain appearance with gel stain. Followed by several coats of a durable clear sealer. Its actually not that hard to do. The main thing you will need, beside supplies is TIME.
Clean the Surface. Use gentle soap and water to remove dirt and oils from the tables existing finish. Apply Stripper. If the table is painted or varnished, youll need to strip the surface. Clean With Mineral Spirits. Sand Table Surface. Apply Stain. Apply Finish.
Depending on the table top and finish youre working with, you could get away with lightly sanding or repainting it to give it a new look. To refinish a table top considerably worn by time, you likely need to strip the clear varnish top coat since varnish tends to get yellowed or irreparably cloudy.
Its almost always better to strip than to sand. To begin with, except in cases where the old finish is flaking off, its a lot more work to sand than to strip using a paint-and-varnish remover.
Generally, you will need to apply your oak furniture oil once or twice a year depending on the temperature and humidity of your home. We recommend Becker Acroma oil, linseed oil, tung oil, or Danish oil which can be purchased here in our catalogue of oak furniture wax and oils.
How to Strip a Kitchen Table: Remove the legs and lay plastic under it. Brush Citristrip all over the stain. Let it sit. Scrape off the stripper. Remove the remaining residue. Let dry. Lightly sand and wipe down. Seal the raw wood.
