It can be an incredibly difficult and frustrating situation to have a repeat ACL injury. For those who have symptoms or would like to continue participation in certain sports, revision ACL reconstruction is an option. This requires removing the re-injured ligament and replacing it with a new graft.
After an ACL reconstruction, up to 14% of patients go on to suffer a graft rupture, an ACL re-rupture [8]. Several risk factors for suffering an ACL re-rupture have been identified, including younger age, high activity level, female sex, and the use of allograft [9,10,11].
A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. ACL revision surgery is a more challenging operation for the orthopedic surgeon than a primary reconstruction.
In general, most revision ACL reconstructions take 9-12 months to adequately heal and for the athlete to recover their strength, endurance, proprioception and balance.
26 weeks beginning to walk normally without pain relief or crutches. 614 weeks full range of motion restored able to climb up and down stairs. 35 months able to do activities such as running without pain (but still avoiding sports) 612 months return to sport.
Most people have some surgery-related pain and discomfort for the first week or so. Not surprisingly, pain from knee surgery decreases with time. By the end of a week or two at the most, you should have very little discomfort. Swelling and bruising are also relatively common, and like discomfort, theyre temporary.
You may be able to return to most of your regular activities within a few weeks. But it will be several months before you have complete use of your knee. It may take as long as 6 months to a year before your knee is ready for hard physical work or certain sports. Surgery can help.
