Retaking classes can be a strategic move, as it shows that youre committed to improving your academic record and mastering the material. However, some factors to consider include the level of classes (whether theyre honors, AP, etc.) and the specific policies of the colleges youre aiming for.
Basic Repeat Policies All attempts of a course will show up on your official transcript.
If you have determined that there is no way to pass the class due to your current performance, you may be better off withdrawing and spending your time ensuring that you pass your other courses with the highest grades possible.
The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes dont replace your low grades they average in with them. Thats right: your low grade wont be dropped the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.
In most cases, if you repeat a course and earn a better grade, your GPA will automatically update to remove your first attempt from the calculation. Your transcript will still show all your attempts and the grades you received each time you took the course, but youll receive credit for only one.
Repeating Coursework A course may be repeated only once. Although only the second grade earned (for better or worse) will be computed into your GPA, both grades will remain on your transcript.
Transfer credit does not replace a grade from Purdue, per Student Regulations . Only repeating the same or equivalent course at any Purdue campus will allow a grade replacement on the transcript.
Retaking the classes online and earning a higher grade will look better than a C on your transcript. Taking extra classes, so long as you can handle the increased rigor, will also help your application by boosting your weighted and unweighted GPA.
