Well, how often do you double check your receipt at a restaurant before you pay? One person emailed our Verify team saying a local restaurant charged them a service fee that didnt include tip. Now theyre asking if restaurants can legally add service piece service fees to the bill. Wake up, Charlottes Megan Bragg verifies. Viewer Crystal asked sent us this e-mail saying my friend and I made a reservation at Leanne Louise. Upon being informed of the menu, we were told there was an automatic $40 fee added to our bill to offset the cost of workers, healthcare and investment options. They went on to say this fee was not inclusive of a tip but added regardless. So Crystal wanted to know, can a restaurant mandate such a fee and charge you regardless of your preference? Lets verify our sources Leanne Louise Restaurant. Attorney Gary Manni, partner at Monty PLC and North Carolina Administrative Code, we docHubed out to the restaurant. They told us what our viewer, Crystal, is referring to is

If the merchant wont help you, and youre sure the amount is incorrect, you can dispute the charge with your card issuer. Instead of disputing the full amount, youll dispute a partial amount. But to reiterate, issues like these are rare, and they can usually be resolved with the merchant.
Take a photo of the signed receipt with the tip amount written in. If the restaurant later changes or alters the tip amount and submits that higher amount to their credit card processor, call the police.
Is it customary to tip in Canada? Yes. No mandatory obligations exist, so dont expect absolutes like heres when and how much you should be tipping in Canada. People in Canada are accustomed to tipping their servicepeople anything from 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill.
Other servers will notice total is incorrect and recalculate the total (most POS systems will actually do this for them). If you mean you entered an incorrect tip amount but the math was correct for the total, they will just take the tip you entered and record the sale total.
They will give you a temporary credit on your account while it is being resolved. Then they will have you fill out a form on it; then tell the story. That should bring in the management and may resolve it.
The charge should be processed based on the total you wrote on the receipt, regardless if your math is accurate. I have seen situations where the total has been corrected and generally if the customer does not complain to his or her credit card issuer, then the charge will go through for the revised amount.
Contact the manager of where you ate. Its the servers responsibility to charge you correctly. If you fee like you were charged wrong, then you should take your receipt to the store and have it corrected and ask for a refund or call them. Otherwise you can call corporate if they have a corporate office.
