Repeating a course In most cases, if you repeat a course and earn a better grade, your GPA will automatically update to remove your first attempt from the calculation. Your transcript will still show all your attempts and the grades you received each time you took the course, but youll receive credit for only one.
Retaking the classes online and earning a higher grade will look better than a C on your transcript. Taking extra classes, so long as you can handle the increased rigor, will also help your application by boosting your weighted and unweighted GPA.
At some colleges, only first-year students can retake failed classes. At others, any student can repeat courses. However, schools often put a cap on the number of repeats and youll need to pay tuition each time. If you fail a class twice, you might want to consider a different major.
Students are allowed to repeat a course in which they had an unsuccessful attempt up to a maximum of two times (three attempts in total) within the CCCD District (OCC, CCC, GWC). An unsuccessful attempt is defined as having completed a course with F, D, NP, or withdrawing a course and receiving a W.
Failing one or more classes could result in academic probation or suspension, depending on your schools policy or the requirements for your major. Most schools place students on academic probation if they fall below a minimum 2.0 GPA at the end of any semester.
Both grades will remain on the students transcript; however, only the higher grade will be used for calculations of degree credit. GPA calculation is updated in the semester of the repeat going forward. Prior semester GPAs will not be altered. Now, here is the same transcript after the repeat.
That said, retaking a class is a great option for improving your GPA and challenging yourself to get a good grade. However, every school has a specific limit to how many times you can retake a class, and also, you should keep in mind that youll have to pay for tuition each time.
Repeating Coursework A course may be repeated only once. Although only the second grade earned (for better or worse) will be computed into your GPA, both grades will remain on your transcript.
