To fix a streaky job, first strip as much of that color off as you can. Scrub the surface of an oil-based with a Scotch-Brite pad and mineral spirits until the streaks are all gone. If you have a water-based stain, scrub the area using a lacquer thinner.
Leave the original stain in place if you want to stain the piece a darker color. If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product.
Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner. To test the stain: Apply a small amount of deck stripper to a small area on your deck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it off with a cleaning rag.
Often when people restain timber, the old Stain is either sanded away, is already flaking off, or can be restained over. While you can restain a deck over an existing stain without sanding or removing the existing peeling product, this isnt always recommended and can leave your deck looking a little worse for wear.
In addition, you can try a second coat of stain to see if it deepens the color. Sometimes, the wet stain is exactly the color that youre looking for, but when the stain dries, it goes dull. Often, applying the clear protective finish will make the stain color-rich again.
Staining over stain is easy and works beautifully if youre applying a dark stain over a lighter stain on the wood. Remember, its the same principle as dying your hair! This rule applies to oil-based stains, water-based stains, and gel stains.
Minwax PolyShades is an easy way to change the color of your currently stained or polyurethane finished wood. Theres no stripping or heavy sanding necessary to remove the old finish!
