To fix a streaky job, first strip as much of that color off as you can. Scrub the surface of an oil-based with a Scotch-Brite pad and mineral spirits until the streaks are all gone. If you have a water-based stain, scrub the area using a lacquer thinner.
You should wait 4 hours between applying your first and second coats of stain or until the first coat is completely dry. Additionally, you should wait 24 hours before walking on the newly stained deck. This allows the stain to penetrate and bond with the wood surface fully.
If you apply a second, unnecessary coat of stain to wood that is already adequately covered, you risk creating a tacky surface that is prone to early peeling because the second coat is not penetrating the wood surface, but simply laying on top of the first coat of stain.

Leave the original stain in place if you want to stain the piece a darker color. If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product.
Be sure to wait until the dock and deck are completely dry before staining. Sand the dock and deck: Before staining, lightly sand the decks surface to remove any rough or weathered spots. Use fine-grit sandpaper and go over the entire surface. After sanding, wipe the deck down with a dry cloth to remove any sawdust.
Yes! With the proper prep work and deck staining knowledge, you can successfully stain a deck that has already been stained.
