You might want to wait until you get to 35-40MPH before downshifting from sixth to fourth to third using the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals properly. Do be careful if you slip into a much lower gear on the downshift. You might end up to over revving the engine, which could cause problems down the road.
While shifting into first gear or a lower gear to slow down may be damaging on you engine, just because it is having to go from low rpms to high. if you are going up hill and need to shift into first gear to maintain your forward progression there is nothing wrong.
Despite this, we wouldnt recommend regular downshifts into first due to the strain it can put on the components within the transmission. So next time you feel that first gear is necessary to launch out of a corner, make sure you think about the required pedal inputs to perform a smooth shift.
If you constantly rode it on the redline in 1st gear everywhere you went, it would eventually do some damage, but every once in a while? No. Despite what the owners manual says, using the engine all through its rev range isnt such a bad idea, especially when its at operating temperature.
The transmission will be going much faster than the engine and so the engine, when the gear is engaged, will rev and exceed the redline. This will cause the vehicle to feel like its hit a brick wall with engine braking and is the main way revving to redline can cause engine damage.
Despite this, we wouldnt recommend regular downshifts into first due to the strain it can put on the components within the transmission. So next time you feel that first gear is necessary to launch out of a corner, make sure you think about the required pedal inputs to perform a smooth shift.
However, do not ever downshift from the 5th to 2nd, if the vehicle is going at more than 50mph. The speed is too high for the car to move at 2nd gear, and it will possibly lead to blowing out the car engine or ruin the car.
Which basically means skipping gears and not to change down through each gear (5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st). You can block gear change from 4th to 1st for example. Its also possible to block gear change up if you have enough speed for that gear.
