Redo entries record data that you can use to reconstruct all changes made to the database, including the undo segments. Therefore, the redo log also protects rollback data.
Undo allows you to take back data entry changes by storing a collection of data maintenance actions. Redo lets you restore the change that was undone. Under certain circumstances, for example, when you change to a different client, the collection of actions ends and you can no longer use undo or redo.
When a failure occurs, the DBMS uses the transaction log to determine which transactions were incomplete at the time of the failure. It then performs a series of operations to undo the incomplete transactions and redo the completed ones. This process is called the redo/undo recovery algorithm.
UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure. REDO is used to roll forward transactions.
The most crucial structure for recovery operations is the redo log, which consists of two or more preallocated files that store all changes made to the database as they occur. Every instance of an Oracle Database has an associated redo log to protect the database in case of an instance failure.
You can disable automatic archiving of filled redo log files by setting the LOGARCHIVESTART initialization parameter to FALSE. Specify LOGARCHIVESTART=FALSE in the initialization parameter file and restart your instance.
What Is Undo? Every Oracle Database must have a method of maintaining information that is used to roll back, or undo, changes to the database. Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo.
