On the File tab, select Options. In the dialog, select the Proofing tab, then select AutoCorrect Options. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following: Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box.
When the document is opened with OpenOffice, the straight quotes remain. To convert the straight quotes to smart quotes: Ensure Format AutoCorrect AutoCorrect Options Localized Options are set correctly. Set the Single Quotes Replace and/or the Double Quotes Replace options.
As the MLA Handbook notes, When your quotation consists entirely of material enclosed by quotation marks in the source work, usually one pair of double quotation marks is sufficient, provided that the introductory wording makes clear the special character of the quoted material (6.50).
When researching, you may find many instances of a quotation within a quotation (that is, the author you are quoting has quoted another author) in scholarly essays. In this case, you use the single quotation marks () for the quote within the quote.
If the quotation enclosed in single marks also contains materialwhether another quotation or the title of a workthat needs to be set off with quotation marks, use double quotation marks around that material. The pattern is double, single, double quotation marks.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
MLA requires you to use the abbreviation qtd. in (quoted in) before the indirect source you cite in your parenthetical reference. You may document the original source in a note if needed. For example, Louis Zukofskys article from 1931 is being quoted in Bonnie Costellos 1981 book on page 78.
Quotations within a Quotation Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
