A back quote is a symbol (`) used for various purposes within computer programming, most prominently to denote code blocks. Its also known as an accent grave or open single quote.
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
If a quotation needs to be substantially changed, it may be better to simply paraphrase the authors ideas in your own words. Fully understanding the context of the words youre paraphrasing, and citing the source completely, gives an authentic representation of the source and strengthens your argument.
On the File tab, select Options. In the dialog, select the Proofing tab, then select AutoCorrect Options. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following: Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
Open Word menu File-Options . Click Proofing section on the left, then AutoCorrect options on the right, then the tab AutoFormat as you type. Uncheck Straight quotes with Smart quotes. Press OK and OK.
