Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT)
One of the common causes of exhaust gas temperature sensor failure is exposure to excessively high temperatures over 900C in some case - the very thing they protect other components from.
Overall, the EGT gauge tells us the temperature of the exhaust gas, which is really an indication of the fuel mixture coming out of the cylinder after the combustion process occurs. A rich mixture, such as during takeoff, will have a much lower EGT than a properly leaned cylinder during cruise.
Sensors generally last a long time. Providing no electrical faults or other issues occur, they may even last the life of your vehicle. However, wear and tear can cause the coolant temperature sensor to fail. When the sensor fails, the temperature of your vehicle may not be regulated correctly.
EGT sensor life and failure causes Properly installed EGTs that have not been subjected to any adverse operating condition can be expected to last up to 100,000 miles or more.
After use EGT probes will sometimes experience whats called aging. Aging causes the measurement to shift a bit, 10 degrees is not unheard of.
Temperature sensors can last a long time, often several years, depending on their type and usage. For instance, thermocouples typically last 1 to 3 years, while RTDs can last 3 to 5 years with proper maintenance. In optimal conditions, some sensors might even last the lifetime of the equipment they are installed in.
The EGT indicator displays temperature measurements for engine exhaust gas temperature (EGT) in Celsius. This gauge displays values using both: A needle on a gauge. A major tick is (Maximum-Minimum)/1,000 degrees, a minor tick is (Maximum-Minimum)/200 degrees Celsius.
